The Architecture of Assertion: How Dhurandhar Built a Narrative for a New Superpower
Commentary
By Vaasu Sharma
Over a prolonged period, Bollywood has often used the concept of national security as a narrative mechanism or a cautious admission of "jingoism." The ‘Dhurandhar’ franchise has smashed that timidity, especially with ‘Dhurandhar-2’. As an International Relations analyst who has followed India's ideological change, post-Balakot under NSA Ajit Doval, one can confidently assert that this visual narrative transcends mere entertainment. This shift in cultural views is a key part of a broader plan to change how society views India's intelligence efforts, its response to cross-border terrorism, and its authority to act.
In the backdrop of ‘Operation Sindoor’, during which India dealt a significant strategic blow to Pakistan, it has been noted that Pakistan's disinformation efforts, backed by nations with hidden agendas, left India somewhat lacking in a suitable counter-narrative. Dhurandhar, though not focused on ‘Operation Sindoor’, adeptly balanced the narrative, and for the first time, it effectively depicted India's national security paradigm within the context of mainstream culture. It emphasizes the idea that in the realm of hybrid warfare, a compelling narrative acts as a deterrent, possessing a potency akin to that of any traditional weaponry.
The Strategic Message
At its core, India is utilizing this cinematic medium to deliver a clear message to the world arena at large and its regional neighborhood in specific: this is exactly how India enforces its stance against adversaries that threaten its national security. In a region where one wayward nation has been given the freedom to openly promote terrorism, India shows that it stands as the sole asymmetric counterweight. The global dynamics have evolved, and Dhurandhar assertively points out that Pakistan, despite getting backing from superpowers like the USA, China and other global players, including Turkey and Saudi Arabia and the sway of organizations and NGOs, India’s strategic resolve remains steadfast. This shift in cultural perceptions plays a vital role in a comprehensive strategy to redefine how society understands India's intelligence operations, its countermeasures against cross-border terrorism, and its justification for action.
Part One: The Lyari Descent
The initial segment of Dhurandhar 1 adeptly establishes the atmosphere by immersing the audience in the stark realities of Lyari, the epicentre of gang warfare in Karachi. For more than thirty minutes, the discourse of India is conspicuously absent. Instead, one observes rival factions such as the Pathans, the Baloch, and regional political entities contending for leadership over extortion activities, heroin smuggling, and congested routes. Hamza's experience of isolation is markedly evident as he is portrayed as a secondary actor. Exploring the challenges of existence within a declining city-state ultimately becomes more mentally stimulating than exciting undercover activities.
The cinematic brilliance of the film emerges progressively. Gradually, and frequently unnoticed, the gang-related disputes start to merge with Pakistan's strategic depth doctrine. The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) reveals itself not merely as a simplistic adversary, but rather as a strategic entity that engages in illicit activities related to transnational terrorism. The criminal factions operating within Lyari discontinue their hostilities associated with narcotics; they initiate collaboration with operatives from terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. The audience experiences a heightened awareness of vulnerability, as those who once mediated local disputes are now involved in collusion that threatens India's sovereignty.
The Reckoning: Unknown Gunmen and Hamza’s War
The retribution of India in Dhurandhar-2 does not present itself as an overt military action or a deployment of ballistic missiles; rather, it is realized through unseen assassins. Hamza, now exerting authority over Lyari, meticulously coordinates a clandestine initiative aimed at identifying and neutralizing each individual considered responsible for India's enduring struggles. Every instance of elimination is intentionally designed to echo local gang rivalries, hence ensuring the absence of any discernible evidence. This reflects the principles of the Doval doctrine: plausible deniability, exacting execution, and strategic reticence.
What marks Dhurandhar 2 as exceptional is the way the audience savours these incidents of violence. Observing the culmination of around four hours that illustrated Lyari's shift towards anti-India sentiments through two cinematic works, the emotional release appears justified. The lively applause was not a reflection of a longing for revenge; rather, it affirmed the nation's ability to protect itself.
The Enemy Within
Nonetheless, Dhurandhar exhibits a markedly heightened level of boldness. It shifts the emphasis towards domestic anti-India factions. The film's narrative clarifies that corrupt officials, traffickers, and entities linked to organized crime have been collaborating with operatives from Pakistan. The film depicts the most disturbing truth of the so-called ‘Liberals’ who praise 'minority appeasement' and 'secular principles' and persistently overlook the specific organized crime syndicates that incite civil unrest, and function as a secret fifth column eroding the integrity of India.
Changing World Order
In today's geopolitical landscape, the importance of strategic autonomy is crucial, and traditional alliances do not restrict a nation's right to self-defense. Dhurandhar conveys this shift with exceptional clarity. The era defined by American dominance is now shifting towards a multi-polar reality in which regional powers, epitomized by India, are increasingly hesitant to passively accept the current status quo. The film's central character does not seek validation or approval from global organizations before taking steps, as India's fundamental authority to protect its people outweighs archaic ideas of Westphalian limitations. The film subtly suggests ignoring the strategic regulations imposed by superpowers to achieve their objectives, while establishing its own framework that prioritizes reliable intelligence and subtle precision. This should not be interpreted as nationalism; instead, it portrays a rising authority asserting its autonomy.
The Rogue Nation: Dhurandhar’s Blueprint
At the core of Dhurandhar's story, Pakistan is portrayed not just as a failed state but as a malicious force, intentionally employing non-state actors as tools of its national agenda. The film questions the idea that cross-border terrorism is merely the domain of lone extremists. Instead, it uncovers a cohesive network where leaders of criminal organizations, jihadist commanders, and intelligence agents come together in the same haven, pursuing shared strategic goals. Dhurandhar straightforwardly explains to the domestic audience the character of India’s adversary, while also assuring the global audience that India is well aware of the root causes of regional turmoil. The film's narrative is unequivocal, even to prospective adversaries, including Bangladesh: ‘a rogue state that provides sanctuary, financial support, and orchestrates acts of terrorism cannot rightfully portray itself as a victim when such terrorism is countered with equivalent force'.
Cinematic Realism and the Shift in Strategic Posture
In February 2019, the Indian Government rolled out a military strategy directed at the Jaish-e-Mohammed facilities in Balakot, while also presenting a new national security framework: the strategy for counter-terrorism will now involve not just documented intelligence but precision strikes as well. Dhurandhar is the first widely recognized film to truly reflect this shift. It reflects the accomplishments of India's secretive operations within Pakistan since the year 2022; specifically, the neutralization of handlers, financiers, and fugitives who formerly operated unchallenged.
As an exceptional achievement, ‘Dhurandhar’ makes strategic responses as swift as a heartbeat. It highlights that modern India's strategy towards terrorism is based on intelligence rather than just reactive actions. This illustrates offensive defense in its truest cinematic form. It recognizes that the main conflict is influenced by lengthy periods of examination and the gradual development of undercover agents. In this comprehensive narrative, the quality of patience is highlighted as a respected attribute, rather than a shortcoming, symbolizing a nation that has, in the end, developed the resilience requisite to achieve its aims.
Conclusion
Dhurandhar has flawlessly merged significant entertainment with the ongoing dialogue of geopolitical assertion. The accepted practices in the area concerning the reliance on surface-level archetypes have been fundamentally reshaped, highlighting that a detailed and sincere depiction of authority is notably more effective than a simplistic representation.
Through its boldly assertive discourse, India firmly claims that its national security strategy has transitioned from a reactive to a proactively focused, meticulously honed, and steadfastly rigorous approach. In a changed global environment where a rogue state can no longer find refuge under the protection of a superpower or the pretense of non-governmental organizations, Dhurandhar signifies a notable cultural statement. It demonstrates that India will meticulously monitor and tackle terrorism through every conceivable avenue, cinematic, strategic, and operational.
